▌ UNDERSTANDING YOUR NECK
Neck discomfort can develop for many different reasons, including muscle strain, prolonged poor posture, normal age-related changes, repetitive activities, or injuries such as whiplash. Understanding the structures of the neck can help explain why certain movements, activities, or injuries may contribute to stiffness, discomfort, or changes in range of motion.
The cervical spine is the upper portion of the spine and consists of seven vertebrae, labeled C1 through C7. These vertebrae help support the weight of the head while allowing the neck to move in multiple directions. Because the cervical spine is responsible for both stability and mobility, it can be affected by everyday activities, repetitive stress, changes that occur over time, and sudden injuries.
The upper two cervical vertebrae, C1 and C2, have unique structures and functions. C1, also called the atlas, supports the skull and contributes to movements such as nodding. C2, known as the axis, works with C1 to allow the head to rotate from side to side.
Together, these vertebrae allow for a significant amount of movement between the head and neck. Changes involving the muscles, joints, discs, or other structures of the cervical spine may contribute to neck stiffness, discomfort, or limited movement.
